HTC statement on AT&T One X bootloader - 'restrictions' prevent unlocking

Android Central

Just about all of HTC's international phones and tablets released over the past year have been added to its bootloader unlock list -- the list of developer-friendly devices that can have their bootloader security disabled  in order to allow enthusiasts to tinker around with custom ROMs and the like. And even a few U.S. network-branded devices have made the cut, including the T-Mobile Sensation 4G and Sprint EVO 3D. But one device that won't be joining them is the new AT&T HTC One X. An official statement from HTC, obtained by MoDaCo, indicates that "restrictions" -- likely imposed by the carrier -- mean that unlike its international cousin, the AT&T LTE version will remain locked up for the foreseeable future.

HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future.

We suspect there'll be many a sad panda in the Android development community today, though this news shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The only AT&T device currently on the HTC bootloader unlock list is the ill-fated Jetstream tablet. In the meantime, developers wanting a high-powered HTC phone to get stuck into on AT&T are left with the (more expensive) option of importing the international Tegra 3 version, which though not listed, is officially unlockable.

Distro Issue 39 takes a look back at 40 years of Atari and the console's cultural impact

If you're in the market for some weekend reading, we've got quite the issue of our weekly tablet mag in the hopper. James Trew takes a look back at 40 years of cultural impact at the hands of Atari in this installment's feature. It doesn't matter to Darren Murph that Apple isn't making an iPad / MacBook Air hybrid, he still wants one and he tells why. Keeping with the gaming theme, Ludwig Kietzmann asks if Trials Evolution is the perfect game in this week's Reaction Time. The hands-on section pays a visit to BlackBerry World while spending some time with Spotify's iPad app and Microsoft's new SkyDrive software offerings. On the reviews side of things, we put the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, Acer Iconia Tab A510 and a duo of throwback mirrorless cameras through the wringer. Speaking of e-readers, Switched On offers some thoughts on the matter and IRL lets you in on three more of our go-to gadgets. If that's not enough, Stat shows how Android slates are feeling the Kindle Fire's heat, The Next Web's Martin Bryant has a go at the Q&A and Box Brown has the Last Word on a hero's required pixel density. Ready to feed that retro gaming appetite? Visit your link of choice below to grab a copy of the weekly to get started.

Adam 'MCA' Yauch, Dead at 47: A Big-Screen Tribute

Beastie Boys rapper's film contributions include star-studded short "Fight For Your Right Revisited."

After a long bout with cancer, the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch died on Friday (May 4). The rapper's death comes as a huge blow to fans of his work with the iconic trio, but he'll also be remembered for the imprint he left on the film world.

While he's widely known as a co-founder of the Brooklyn hip-hop group, MCA was an accomplished director and producer, and his music is featured on an array of popular music soundtracks. The Hollywood community took to Twitter this afternoon to share their thoughts, with Ben Stiller tweeting, "So sad that Adam Yauch is gone. A truly great musician & filmmaker. He stood for integrity as an artist. What a loss. He was a very good man." While Jonah Hill followed up with a heartfelt tweet: "I'm filled with so much sorrow to hear about the world losing Adam Yauch. He was such a beautiful person and artist. My heart is broken."

As fans mourn the loss, MTV News honors his career and achievements on the big screen.

"Fight for Your Right Revisited"
The comedic short was Yauch's most recent writing and direction project and it debuted at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. With as ensemble cast that includes Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Susan Sarandon, Will Arnett and Stanley Tucci, the story picks up from the raging party at the close of the trio's 1987 "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" music video. The sequel follows the Beastie Boys and their delinquent antics as they break into a bodega to steal beer and try to out-breakdance their future selves.

"Awesome: I F---in' Shot That!"
Yauch produced and directed this memorable Beasties documentary, using footage shot by 50 fans at their 2004 Madison Square Garden concert. Audience members were given video cameras and asked to shoot the whole show. The project was meant to re-create for viewers at the home the exhilarating fan-experience of attending a sold-out show. Interestingly enough, MCA's producer credit for the project is under the name of Nathaniel Hornblower, Yauch's "Swiss uncle" and alter ego.

Oscilloscope
In 2008, Yauch made his directorial debut with "Gunnin' for That #1 Spot," a doc about street basketball. The film follows eight of 24 high-school basketball players competing in the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic at Harlem, New York's famed Rucker Park. Of the eight players Yauch chose, six now have careers in the NBA, proving his eye for talent.

"Gunnin' " also marked one of his production company's first efforts. Oscilloscope Laboratories has gone on to distribute a number of well-known works, including "Howl," the Allen Ginsberg biopic starring James Franco, and the Oscar-nominated thriller "We Need to Talk About Kevin," starring Tilda Swinton. The company recently announced that they had acquired the rights to the documentary "The Apple Pushers," which tells the stories of immigrant street vendors who sell fruits and vegetables in poor New York City neighborhoods. The film is narrated by Edward Norton.

Soundtracks
MCA's music with the Beastie Boys has been featured on countless movie soundtracks, including "Baby Mama," "17 Again," J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," "Shrek Forever After," "Iron Man 2," "Horrible Bosses" and the Hugh Jackman robotic-action flick "Real Steel." They also had hit songs featured in the video games "Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock" ("Sabotage") and "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground" ("Electric Worm").

Share your condolences for MCA's family, friends and fans in the comments below.

Tune in to MTV tonight at 8 p.m. for "Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy," an hour-long special hosted by Sway celebrating the life and career of Adam "MCA" Yauch, including his biggest moments and remembrances from his friends and peers. Justin Bieber Goes 'More Mature' With 'Boyfriend' Video

Pop star brings new clip to MTV News and answers all his fans' questions during Thursday's 'MTV First: Justin Bieber.'

From the back of a Shelby Mustang right to a showroom filled with classic cars, Justin Bieber premiered his highly anticipated "Boyfriend" video on Thursday (May 3) during "MTV First: Justin Bieber." The sexy, sunny, Director X-directed clip certainly had fans in the room cheering.

The video comes to life with shots of Bieber driving a muscle car, snuggling with his beautiful co-star and getting his dance on alongside his pals, all while they chill out at a rooftop party somewhere in Los Angeles. It's a more mature look at the growing pop star, who in only a few short years has gone from strumming his guitar on the streets of his Canadian hometown to full-fledged international pop-star status, where he fills arenas all over the world.

"I kind of switched it up from all the teasers," Bieber told MTV News' Sway Calloway about what fans saw of the video before its premiere. "I switched up the whole video on them, and really, I think it's super cool. I wanted to do something a little bit more mature."

The video is full of swaggy images, ranging from his varsity jacket to his cool car, but what left one fan in the "MTV First" audience most intrigued were the gold sneakers he sports in the video. "I did pick out those swaggy gold shoes," he laughed. "They spray-painted them gold. That's what I'm going to do: I'm gonna start wearing gold shoes all the time."

With the video's focus on cars and friends, the 18-year-old chatted about his own personal car collection. "I have a Range Rover and a Fisker. And I have a Smart Car. It just helps me get from point A to point B. I call it my little 'swag car,' " he said.

While Bieber made it clear that his off-time doesn't look a lot like the party in the video, he did share what he does on the weekends: "I work. ... If I'm with my friends, we like to do regular stuff," he said, before opening up about what he does to unsuspecting pals in an elevator. "We have this game where basically we hit each other in the balls."

In addition to opening up about the video and his unusual take on riding in an elevator, he also talked about working with pals Drake, Kanye West, Usher and Taylor Swift for his brand-new album, Believe, out June 19. "Boyfriend" is the lead single from the highly anticipated release.

But with the music world conquered, he also teased his forthcoming work in Hollywood. He gave an update on his in-the-works basketball movie with Mark Wahlberg, as well as his blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in "Men In Black 3." He noted, however, "Right now I'm focused on my album and Believe."

What did you think of the "Boyfriend" video? Share your reviews in the comments!

Yes, people still read: e-book sales by UK publishers grew 54 percent in 2011

All hail the e-book! Seriously, if it weren't for this marvelous literary development, try saying with a straight face that you wouldn't at least take pause before adding a new title to your collection. Numbers are in from The Publisher's Association -- a group of 120 companies across the trade in the UK -- which reveals that e-book digital sales have increased 54 percent for the year 2011, and of that statistic, 13 percent of revenues came from academic and professional titles. As a sign of changing preferences, the total sales of both e-books and their traditional counterparts fell by two percent during the year -- and let's be honest, it's not hard to see which group fell short. Also reflective of the shift is the fact that average book prices fell by 1.3 percent during the year, which compares favorably to the UK's current inflation rate of 4.47 percent. Those interested in the full story will find the PR after the break.

'The Expendables 2' Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Sylvester Stallone and his team return to fight an unexpected threat in this action-packed trailer.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

After teasing the film with exclusive posters and movie stills, the first full-length trailer for "The Expendables 2" finally dropped Thursday (May 3).

IGN premiered the preview to the action-packed film with an intro from Sylvester Stallone himself. "If you thought the first movie kicked some serious ass," Sly says, "you haven't seen anything yet." With an A-List cast including Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean-Claude Van Damme and newcomers Liam Hemsworth and Chuck Norris, we don't doubt the "Rocky" actor's words.

The film follows the return of Barney Ross (Stallone) and his team as Mr. Church (Willis) enlists the Expendables for a job that seems like easy money. When one of their crew is murdered, however, the revenge they seek leaves them stranded in enemy territory having to combat an unexpected threat.

Check out the five key scenes from the action-packed trailer:

Swinging Into Action
The trailer opens with sirens blaring and the crew propelling down a zip-line into the middle of a forest. As you'd expect, the firing begins immediately as sparks start flying and a truck flips over — and we're only 30 seconds in. Just when you think Barney Ross and his team are the ones doing the ass-kicking, they're surrounded by the enemy. Lee Christmas (Statham) looks over Barney and asks, "That loaded?" Barney replies, "I hope so," and begins taking their captors down one by one with a hidden gun in his hand — or did he? The shot then cuts to newcomer Bill "The Kid" Timmons (Hemsworth), who is hiding in the trees with a smoking gun.

Time to Reload
The team loads their weapons as Barney tells the Kid, "Somebody's hooked." Protecting the world by taking out the bad guys with some heavy artillery — who wouldn't be? The next scene shows Lee in priest robes saying, "I now pronounce you man and knife," and cuts away before we catch a glimpse of who he inevitably stabs. The next clips show various members of the team speeding off on motorcycles, engaging in hand to hand combat, taking down helicopters and setting off explosion after explosion.

The Threat
Our villain comes in the form of Jean-Claude Van Damme (aptly named Jean Vilain) who's planning on using a very powerful chemical to change the balance of the world. World dominance, that's what every bad guy is after, right? As we see his team gathering, the tagline flashes across the screen, "When the threat is this great, everyone is expendable." If everyone's expendable, Barney is going to need a lot more men to get through this one.

Cue Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger
Like clockwork the invincible Chuck Norris (Booker) approaches the camera walking away from cars engulfed in flames and smoke. (Cool guys don't look at explosions, remember?) Next is Arnold Schwarzenegger's (Trench) turn to get in a version of his classic tagline: "I'm back." As he says it, he leans out of a window wearing a band of bullets around his chest and casually smoking a cigar. Killing a few bad guys? Been there, done that.

The Plan
When Lee asks the plan of attack to stop the enemy, Barney says, "Track 'em, find 'em, kill 'em." And you guessed it, more explosions, more knife fights, and bullets, bullets, bullets. If you're looking for an action film, you will not be disappointed. One clip that stood out was Church pulling up in a tiny car and telling Trench to get in. He rips the door off the automobile as he climbs in and says, "My shoe is bigger than this car." It hints at the inevitable comedy involved in a film with an all-star cast. In the final sequence, Barney drives a plane into a tunnel and Lee says, "You're going to need a new plane." The two laugh as the screen fades to black.

"The Expendables 2" will explode into theaters August 17.

Check out everything we've got on "The Expendables 2."

Obama, Romney offer classic choices on big issues

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For the better part of a year, Mitt Romney has tethered himself to an array of positions designed for the Republican presidential primaries, stances that put him to the right of where he's been through much of his career and raise questions about where he really wants to go. President Barack Obama's politicking has tacked to the left, thanks to all those speeches to Democratic fundraisers and other activist-heavy events that play up the liberal in him.

Now, though, it's time for both politicians to start maximizing their appeal to the broad electorate, a task Obama had the luxury of starting early as the incumbent without an intra-party struggle to settle. And as they compete for that middle ground, the essential differences between them may become harder to see.

Those differences surely exist. Obama and his Republican challenger are offering voters a distinct choice on taxes, a sharp disagreement over health care and a classic ideological divide on social issues that neither candidate seems eager to talk about. So, too, Obama has shown he believes in the power of the purse ? or the power of debt ? to right an economic downturn in ways that Republicans find hard to swallow.

Take taxes. Romney and Obama are at odds over whether low taxes on the wealthy help fuel the engine of economic growth or are an unfair giveaway to people who don't need it.

That's far more than a debating-society point. Despite the substantial tax cuts Obama has supported since becoming president, he wants to push even more than in 2008 to raise taxes on the rich and on companies that outsource jobs. Romney wants lower rates for all incomes and no special tax penalties on corporate behavior.

Romney vows to try to roll back Obama's health care law if the Supreme Court doesn't do it in its pending ruling on the case, and to set a different course that lets states drive policy on that front.

Should he succeed, it would be a massive uprooting of one of the most significant reconstructions of social policy in generations. This from a man who, as Massachusetts governor, pioneered the approach Obama adapted for the nation at large.

Although presidential candidates rarely are explicit about it, they have a hefty interest in reworking the ideological balance of the Supreme Court, now with the slimmest conservative majority, should they get that chance.

Romney's opposition to abortion rights can't go very far when those rights were affirmed long ago by the court, but that could be a different story with the addition of another conservative or two. Obama's health care law would not be in judicial jeopardy if he'd been able to nudge the court left.

Both have records that defy easy labels.

Romney governed pragmatically in Massachusetts. He says he had no choice in a state so dominated by the opposing party. That record, along with his flips on some issues, has fed the perception that he's a man of the middle, not necessarily a terrible place to be in a general election. But if he's gone through the GOP race as a moderate in conservative's clothing, that's not to say he and Obama are indistinguishable on the big and little issues of the day.

Obama clearly believes in the value of regulation, despite efforts to roll back some burdensome rules. Romney just as evidently wants to cut them, despite assurances he's not looking to throw out the whole federal rulebook. Obama's environmental record is mixed, even disappointing, in the eyes of advocates, due to his aggressive posture on drilling and his failure to win a cap and trade law even from a Democratically controlled Congress.

But he still stands in contrast to an opponent who wants to open more protected waters for exploration, looks dimly on the potential of green energy, questions the science of climate change and blames environmental regulation for holding back the promise of American energy.

For all those Republican primary debates and Obama's time in office, there are blanks that need to be filled in for both.

Obama has not come up with a plan to rescue Social Security; his opponent has made more of a start on that by proposing to raise the future retirement age for full benefits by one or two years and to reduce inflation increases in benefits for wealthier recipients, while protecting the status quo for people 55 and over.

Romney's handling of any number of foreign policy crises cannot be seen until and unless they confront him in office, whereas Obama has a record to judge.

In any event, only so much can be read into their positions. The makeup of Congress after the election will determine whether a candidate's to-do list gets done, a reality often neglected when presidential candidates make bold promises.

Circumstance, too, will shape what gets done. Obama walked into a steep recession, with the financial sector, auto industry and housing market reeling. By necessity he became a manager on the fly, much as George W. Bush did when the terrorist attacks of 2001 changed everything for years to come.

Google Docs adds 450 fonts and 60 templates, sadly includes Comic Sans

Image

Google Docs has lagged behind offline apps in the number of fonts and pre-made layouts to choose from, but that's just changed with a much larger catalog for both. More than 60 new templates and 450 fonts are now on tap to use in your presentations and reports. This comes on top of a handful of other recent improvements, such as Google Drive support, searching the Life Photo archive and boosts to accessibility and spreadsheet layouts. Apps Script gets both a Google Drive tie-in and new publishing control, too. Be forewarned: Comic Sans is one of the new font options, and it's clearly not an April Fools' gag.
