LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Oscar ceremony has much to prove Sunday, including whether a blockbuster-free field can draw a TV audience and if Billy Crystal's host routine remains a crowd-pleaser.

Brian Grazer and Don Mischer, the show's producers, are laughing off the challenges: "Comedy is the direction we're going in this year," said Mischer.

For Crystal, who returns to the ceremony (8:30 p.m. EST, ABC) after an absence of eight years, that means jokes and patter that were being rehearsed at the last minute to avoid punch line leaks.

The actor also is bringing back two of his trademark Oscar bits: A film sequence in which he appears via CGI in clips from the nine best-picture contenders, and a musical number that pays tribute to the ceremony and nominees.

"It's everything everybody is going to want to see from Billy Crystal," Grazer said. "Billy was born for this job. He loves being the host and he does it with complete zest and enthusiasm. He makes it fun for everybody."

Crystal has help. Presenting team Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis have a "great gag," Grazer promised, with more light moments planned courtesy of co-presenters Tina Fey and Bradley Cooper and, in a group effort, the cast of "Bridesmaids."

There's a chance for controversy in a presidential election year and, with Sacha Baron Cohen invited, for mock political friction. Rumor has it Cohen will come dressed as the character from "The Dictator," his upcoming movie about a faux country's despot.

Although there were hints of motion picture academy uneasiness about the possible stunt, "we're thrilled to have him," Grazer said.

Among the high-wattage presenters for the 84th Academy Awards at the Hollywood & Highland Center (formerly the Kodak Theatre) are Halle Berry, Tom Cruise, Natalie Portman, Michael Douglas, Penelope Cruz and Angelina Jolie. They'll be framed by a stage set evoking a classic movie theater and the evening's theme: the enduring nature of the moviegoing experience.

Nominees in the lead acting categories include Viola Davis for "The Help," Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady," George Clooney for "The Descendants" and Jean Dujardin for "The Artist."

But the night's starring role goes to Crystal, 63, who acknowledged in a Oscar.com video that "there's so much expected" of his return. He should have the audience's goodwill in his ninth Oscar gig since, in the best Hollywood tradition, he came to the rescue after Eddie Murphy dropped out as host.

Murphy's exit followed that of ceremony producer Brett Ratner, who had drawn fire for using a pejorative word for gay men at a screening of "Tower Heist," directed by Ratner and starring Murphy. Oscar-winning movie producer Grazer ("A Beautiful Mind") jumped in to work with awards veteran Mischer.

Last year's co-hosts aren't a hard act for Crystal to follow. Anne Hathaway and James Franco were picked to appeal to younger viewers but while Hathaway was game, an inert Franco proved ill-suited for the task.

The nominees represent a different challenge for the show. Favorites include "The Artist," a daring black-and-white silent film; "Hugo," an unusual Martin Scorsese work that trades grittiness for charm; and the family drama "The Descendants" with Clooney as a cuckold.

None has soared at the box office. Among the best-picture nominees, only "The Help," based on the best-selling book about 1960s race relations in the South, hit $100 million in ticket sales and counting (it's at more than $170 million.)

Blockbusters were left in the cold. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," couldn't overcome the academy's resistance to the franchise. Nor, more understandably, could "The Hangover Part II," another 2011 success.

Such snubs tend to produce the TV equivalent of a weak box office: low ratings. When a monster hit like "Titanic" ruled the Oscars in 1998, the ceremony drew an impressive 55.2 million viewers. "The King's Speech," last year's less-mainstream best-picture winner, was watched by 37.9 million people.

There is an effort to boost viewership through social networks. The academy is inviting fans to make awards predictions on its Facebook page and share them with friends, while ABC will use Twitter to reveal the scene backstage and on the red carpet.

At stake are advertising dollars as well as bragging rights in the award show competition. This month's Grammys ? riding a wave of interest in Adele's post-surgery comeback and the death of Whitney Houston ? drew nearly 40 million viewers to eclipse the Academy Awards for the first time since 1984.

DETROIT (AP) ? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning Thursday about using a common paint-stripping chemical to refinish bathtubs after tying it to 13 deaths in 10 states.

The CDC said the alert was based on research that began at Michigan State University. Scientists found 13 deaths between 2000 and 2011 of workers using products containing methylene chloride to strip paint from residential bathtubs. Three of the deaths were in Michigan, and the remaining 10 were reported in nine other states.

Methylene chloride is widely used as a degreaser and paint remover in industrial and home-improvement products.

"Each death occurred in a residential bathroom with inadequate ventilation," the CDC said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. "Protective equipment, including a respirator, either was not used or was inadequate to protect against methylene chloride vapor."

The report said the chemical "has been recognized as potentially fatal to furniture strippers and factory workers but has not been reported previously as a cause of death among bathtub refinishers."

Using methylene chloride-based products in confined spaces like bathrooms presents great risks, the CDC said. It urged worker safety and public health agencies, manufacturers and trade groups to "communicate the extreme hazards" of their use to employers, workers and the public.

"Employers should strongly consider alternative methods of bathtub stripping," it said.

The alert's co-author, Michigan State's Kenneth Rosenman, said it is better to keep the chemical out of the bathroom. Its vapors are heavier than air and likely remain in bathtubs after each application.

"To use products containing methylene chloride safely, work areas must be well-ventilated, and when levels of methylene chloride exceed recommended exposure limits, workers must use protective equipment," Rosenman, chief of the school's Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, said in a statement Thursday. "In a small bathroom, it is unlikely these products can be used safely."

The co-author of the CDC warning, Michigan State industrial hygienist Debra Chester, first investigated the 2010 death of a 52-year-old man who owned a bathtub refinishing business. She then discovered two other Michigan deaths, leading to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigation that turned up 13 deaths.

Thunderstorms rake South, spawning tornado

Updated at 6:30 p.m. ET: Damaging?winds and at least one tornado struck the South on Friday as part of a large storm system moving across the eastern half of the country that dumped snow?on the Midwest, the National Weather Service said.

Thunderstorms raked parts of Alabama and Georgia, then moved east toward the coast through the evening.

In South Carolina,?a tornado touched down near the Lexington-Aiken county line and moved into?Lexington County, The State newspaper reported on its website, citing the weather service. The State said the?Lexington County Fire Service reported that trees were knocked down in the rural area and?at least one house was damaged, but?there were no injuries.

The Augusta Chronicle reported on its website?that high winds downed?trees and power lines in the region. Strong winds and large hail were reported in the Charlotte, N.C., area.

Two girls, ages 9 and 12, in North Carolina's Craven County?reportedly suffered minor injuries when they were knocked to the ground by lightning after getting off their school bus, WCTI12.com reported.?The ABC station's website said the girls were running from the bus to their front door when lightning struck nearby. The girls were up and walking around within minutes after an emergency services crew arrived, the website said.

Winds up to 60 to 70 miles an hour had been forecast,?with the strongest gusts expected in parts of the Carolinas and southeast Virginia.

"Although we think there can be some isolated tornadoes, we don?t think that?s the primary threat for today," Steven Weiss, chief of the science support branch at the National Weather Service?s storm prediction center said earlier. "We think the primary threat is going to develop and become more of a wind damage threat as this strong cold front continues to progress eastward of the Appalachians and have new storm development along it."?

By evening, Doppler radar at NBC station?WCNC of Raleigh, N.C., showed heavy thunderstorm bands slipping toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Dozens of homes were damaged Wednesday night in a tornado near Rome, Ga., knocking out power and forcing schools to close, local media reported, citing authorities. When asked earlier?if Friday's storms would be a repeat of earlier this week, Weiss said: "We hope not."

"For the time being, there may be some locally heavy rain just because there?s a continuation of storms one after the other moving across -- particularly parts of east-central Georgia into central South Carolina and moving into southeast North Carolina at this time," he said.

Part of larger system
The wet weather in the South was part of the "same large storm system that is moving across the eastern half of the country. The northern end of the storm system is associated with colder air and that?s where we?re getting the heavier snows up in that area, particularly across some of the Great Lakes region at this time," Weiss said.

Meteorologist Tim Ballisty had predicted that Chicago could receive "a half foot or more" of snow.

"On Thursday into Friday, look for a stripe of snow to lay down from the Dakotas into Iowa, northern Illinois, far northern Indiana and lower Michigan," he added. "The bulk of the heaviest snow will fall south of Milwaukee -- closer to the Wisconsin/Illinois border."

The storm that blanketed Chicago is now heading Northeast, and the South is also experiencing severe weather. Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel reports.

But NBCChicago.com reported that?Chicago?largely avoided snowfall, although some of the city's northern suburbs got up to 6 inches, and the most snow -- 8.5 inches -- fell in city of?Cary, near to the Wisconsin state line.

The storm also?dropped several inches of snow over parts of North and South Dakota on Thursday with?some places getting?more than a foot of snow.

?This is not unusual to see a storm like this toward the end of February,? said Weiss, noting ?we?re certainly not out of winter yet? though there hasn't been a lot of storms this year.

On a global basis, films and other audiovisual services?create?a?$12 billion trade surplus in the sector for the United States, the White House said.

Last year, Chinese box office revenue was up to $2.1 billion,?with much?of that from 3D titles.

The agreement allows more American exports to China of 3D, IMAX, and similar enhanced-format movies on favorable commercial terms, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said.

"This is a major step forward in spurring the growth of U.S. exports to China," Chris Dodd, president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), said in a statement.

"It has long been a top priority for the MPAA, and it is tremendous news for the millions of American workers and businesses whose jobs depend on the entertainment industry."

Walt Disney Co. president and CEO Robert Iger said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter: "China is one of the most populous countries in the world, and this agreement represents a significant opportunity to provide Chinese audiences increased access to our films."

The U.S. movie industry has long complained about China's tight restrictions on the number of foreign films allowed into the country each year, a limit that they say helps fuel demand for pirated DVDs that are widely available in China.

While the quota of 20 foreign films per year remains in place, Beijing granted other concessions that pleased Hollywood.

The deal strengthens the opportunities to distribute films through private enterprises rather than the state film monopoly, and ensures fairer compensation levels for U.S. blockbuster films distributed by Chinese state-owned enterprises, U.S. trade officials said.

The agreement will be reviewed after 5 years to ensure that it is working as envisioned,?they?said.

Gunmen free 118 from Nigeria prison; 1 guard dead (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Attackers stormed a federal prison in Nigeria with heavy gunfire and explosives, killing one guard and freeing 118 inmates in a new assault demonstrating the continued instability in the nation, an official said Thursday.

The attack on the prison happened at Koton-Karifi, a town in Kogi state just south of Nigeria's central capital Abuja. The gunmen attacked just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, fighting through the prison gate and killing one guard in the process, said Nigeria Prisons Service spokesman Kayode Odeyemi.

Those inside the prison escaped in the fighting, with 118 inmates known to be missing Thursday afternoon, Odeyemi said. However, local prison official Hadijha Aminu said guards still hadn't completed a head count and didn't know how many prisoners actually were inside the prison at the time of the attack.

The government said an investigation into the attack had begun.

"One does not really know why" the gunmen attacked, Odeyemi said. "It might be that some of the armed robbers are trying to free the armed robbers there awaiting trial."

The prison held armed robbers and kidnappers, Odeyemi said. He said he did not know if the prison held any members of a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which has been plaguing the country with violence over the last year.

Boko Haram launched a similar massive prison break in Bauchi state in September 2010 that freed about 700 inmates there. The style of the attack Wednesday, which apparently used explosives and heavy gunfire, matched that previous assault by the sect.

Members of the sect have been blamed for killing at least 286 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The sect's violence comes as part of a campaign which its leader, Abubakar Shekau, says is aimed at avenging Muslim deaths, freeing imprisoned members and pushing for strict Shariah law across multiethnic Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the prison attack, nor did authorities say they had any suspects immediately in mind. If Boko Haram carried out Wednesday night's attack, it would be the farthest strike south the group has made. Nigeria is largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north. Much of Boko Haram's previous attacks have taken place largely in the north.

Nigeria's prisons remain overcrowded and understaffed, with the majority of those imprisoned awaiting trials for years that likely will never come. A 2007 study by Amnesty International called the system "appalling," with children remaining locked up with their parents and guards routinely bribed by inmates. Despite pledges by the government to reform the system, it remains largely the same today.

Iran claims two steps to nuclear self-sufficiency (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran claimed Wednesday that it has taken two major steps toward mastering the production of nuclear fuel, a defiant move in response to increasingly tough Western sanctions over its controversial nuclear program.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad oversaw the insertion of the first Iranian domestically-made fuel rod into a research reactor in northern Tehran, the country's official IRNA news agency reported.

Separately, the semiofficial Fars agency reported that a "new generation of Iranian centrifuges" had been installed and had gone into operation at the country's main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz in central Iran.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing atomic weapons, a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's geared for peaceful purposes only, such as energy production.

The crisis has already resulted in sanctions placed on Iran's economy, and there are fears that it could escalate to military action.

Iran's nuclear announcements came as the country said Wednesday it halted oil exports to six European countries ? the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Portugal ? in response to recent new European Union sanctions.

Iran has said it is forced to manufacture nuclear fuel rods, which provide fuel for reactors, on its own since international sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets. In January, Iran said it had produced its first such fuel rod.

IRNA boasted that the nuclear fuel announcement is the final step in the entire cycle of nuclear fuel ? from extracting uranium ore to producing the finished rods.

Fuel rods are tube metals containing pellets made of low-enriched uranium. The rod is then inserted into a fuel assembly, which then is placed in the core of the reactor.

IRNA said the nuclear fuel rods were produced at Iran's nuclear fuel fabrication plant in Isfahan, central Iran.

The centrifuges that Iran claims to be now manufacturing are machines that are used to enrich uranium. Low-enriched uranium ? at around 3.5 percent ? can be used to fuel a reactor to generate electricity, which Iran says is the intention of its program. But if uranium is further enriched to around 90 percent purity, it can be used to develop a nuclear warhead.

Iran has been producing uranium enriched up to 5 percent for years, and began enriching up to near 20 percent, considered a threshold between low and high enriched uranium ? in February 2010.

Iran claims it needs the higher enriched uranium to produce fuel for the Tehran reactor that makes medical radioisotopes needed for cancer patients.

Israel is worried Iran could be on the brink of achieving nuclear weapons capability) and many Israeli officials believe sanctions only give Tehran time to move its nuclear program underground, out of reach of Israeli military strikes. The U.S. and its allies argue that Israel should hold off on any military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities to allow more time for sanctions to work.
