Ron Paul is Making a Huge Splash in Iowa Before Caucus (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Texas Congressman Ron Paul is definitely making waves in Iowa just one day before the caucus voters turn out to decide who will claim victory to the first in the nation balloting. He has a lot of support in Iowa, and just may walk away with a victory.

A campaign stop in Des Moines on Monday drew an overflow crowd, The Ticket reported. But, in an interesting twist, when Yahoo! News interviewed the people in the first rows of seats, only one indicated they were an Iowan. That speaks volumes for the level of supporters Ron Paul can pull to an event, but it is an ominous sign just one day before voting begins.

Ultimately, Paul will finish in one of the top two spots. He has deep support that often isn't reflected in traditional polling numbers. The Des Moines Register showed Paul within 2 percent points of front-runner Romney just days before ballots will be cast. That, for all intents and purposes, is a statistical tie.

There is nothing traditional about how Paul has chosen to campaign. His positions are nontraditional for GOP candidates and, in fact, he has some positions that even Democrats could not support. His ideas appeal to the populists, but don't connect deeply enough for conservative GOP voters to win him enough delegates to pull out a victory this year.

Paul's ideas may be unusual, but they warrant some consideration. It will take a radical approach to government if we are to fix the mounting national debt and runaway entitlement spending in Washington. He has some ideas that should be discussed. He has some that don't deserve any discussion at all.

Regardless, the man is making his mark on the GOP race and is unlikely to go away anytime soon. In fact, it might be best if his campaign continued long enough for the other candidates to understand that traditional fixes aren't going to work. We need some Paul radical ideas.
